Fixed- Something went wrong We couldn’t start your program Office 2016

If you are unable to open Office 2016 applications and get this error message:

Something went wrong We couldn't start your program. Please try starting it again. If it won't start, try repairing Office from ‘Programs and Features‘ in the Control Panel.

Check Microsoft Office Click-to-Run Service

Description: Manages resource coordination, background streaming, and system integration of Microsoft Office products and their related updates. This service is required to run during the use of any Microsoft Office program, during initial streaming installation and all subsequent updates.

It should be set to Manual and should be able to start.

  1. Go to Computer Management -> Services And Applications -> Services and look for Microsoft Office Click-to-Run Service

  2. Verify that it is not Disabled. It should be set to Manual. It is started by Office 2016 applications.

    If it is set to manual try to run it manually and verify that it starts. If there is a problem check Windows Log for errors.

    If there is a problem with user, go to properties of this service, Log On tab and make sure that Log on as: is set to Local System account

  1. Windows could not start the Ms Office Click-to-Run Service service on Local Computer.
    Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

  2. Just have to say thanks for this solution. Had an update overnight and this error occurred this morning when my wife tried to start her work. She called me, I searched and found this solution, explained over the phone what to do and all sorted. Thanks again.

  3. I have applied the suggested solution and it does work. But that if not the problem. The problem is that this error repeats itself time and time again, even when the program is re-installed. In my case it is happening everyday. Isn’t there a solution that is permanently valid?
